href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/paige-lyles\/\">Paige Lyles<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megan-chan746\/\">Megan Chan<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ariana-dominick\/\">Ariana Satari<\/a>\u00a0know what it\u2019s like to start their periods unprepared: \u201cthe feelings of panic and stress that flood your chest as you have to drop what you\u2019re doing and rush to find a solution,\u201d says Lyles.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>But despite periods being a natural bodily function, the lack of access to period products in public places (not to mention the lack of education around menstruation) leaves many people in this very position \u2014 even while toilet paper and tissues are provided in public restrooms without a second thought. \u201cPeriod poverty\u201d affects everyone, Lyles, Chan, and Satari point out: from unhoused people to \u201cworking students and parents who have to choose between buying food and buying increasingly expensive period products.\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>That\u2019s why Lyles, who studies civil and environmental engineering, and Chan and Satari,\u00a0 mechanical engineering, founded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hebeemap.wixsite.com\/hebee\">Hebee<\/a>, a smart period-products dispenser and mobile app for school campuses where both menstruators and facilities staff can see on the app where dispensers are located and exactly how many pads and tampons are stocked in each. One of its unique innovations is a universal wall that can expand or contract to fit products of varying size.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Hebee is one of two Berkeley student teams that developed their innovations over the past year through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthtech.berkeley.edu\/\">Health Tech CoLab<\/a>, an ecosystem to support students developing medical devices, diagnostic tools, and digital health tools that increase access to healthcare. The CoLab\u2019s Health Access Cohort also included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arie.cc\/diaita\/\">Diaita<\/a>, which offers personalized diet and exercise plans as well as cognitive behavior therapy to ward off Type 2 diabetes and its associated illnesses.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThese teams are not only examples of clever product innovation, but they epitomize what it means to be social innovators,\u201d says CoLab manager Karenna Rehorn. \u201cThey\u2019re motivated and guided first and foremost by wanting to improve people\u2019s health and lives and to address glaring social and health disparities.\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Being a part of the Health Access Cohort, says Diaita cofounder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/arie-cc\/\">Ariel Ho<\/a>, a registered dietician from Taiwan and Biomedical Visiting Scholar at Berkeley, \u201chas given the team the chance to participate in various workshops on customer discovery, prototyping, user testing, and pitch development.\u201d The CoLab, she adds, \u201chas provided Diaita with opportunities to connect with academic and industry experts to gain insights into how to build a product that better fits user needs and furthers healthcare access.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3a607f8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3a607f8\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9baa95a\" data-id=\"9baa95a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66a7746 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"66a7746\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/healthtech.berkeley.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/aho.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Ariel Ho (Diaita photo)<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-429ac3c\" data-id=\"429ac3c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-219630a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"219630a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Ho\u00a0founded Diaita a year ago. Like the Hebee team, they noticed a glaring gap in a field of healthcare and access: the \u201cneed for a digital health intervention that provided prediabetic individuals with personalized, flexible, culturally responsive diet and activity suggestions with an emphasis on long-term, sustainable behavior change.\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>As CoLab residents, Ho and collaborators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/midori-pierce\/\">Midori Pierce<\/a>, a Master of Information Management Systems student, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meng-chia-chiang-503aa621b\/\">Meng-Chia Chiang<\/a>, in the Haas Global Diploma Program in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, conducted more than 100 interviews to understand potential users\u2019 needs in order to determine product-market fit, performed in-depth testing of their user interface and user experience designs, and prototyped their app. True to the CoLab\u2019s mission of using collaboration and networking as engines of health-tech innovation, they linked up with medical professionals, insurance industry experts, investors, and researchers.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>During their CoLab tenure, the Diaita team learned that they need not have a perfect \u201cminimum viable product\u201d from the get-go, but rather a solid one that can be refined over time. Originally, they had wanted to incorporate machine learning and a wearable device, but reconsidered those ideas as long-term goals. They also learned, as Ho said, to \u201ccommunicate effectively through differences and use their diverse skill sets and perspectives\u201d to work through clashing opinions on product design \u2014 something that naturally arises out of a team with such diverse professional backgrounds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1eb97e4 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1eb97e4\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a33ae33\" data-id=\"a33ae33\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4bf8101 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4bf8101\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Diaita team recalled \u201cdeeply personal and heartfelt\u201d stories from their customer-discovery interviews about their experiences with diabetes-related problems \u2014 and interviewees\u2019 enthusiasm for Diaita\u2019s innovation.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cHearing these stories has kept the team motivated week after week and month after month to continue on with this very important work, knowing that there are so many individuals who can benefit from Diaita\u2019s health-tech solution,\u201d Ho said.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Diaita plans to soon release an initial version of its product through Apple\u2019s App Store and the Google Play Store, while continuing to interview stakeholders, iterate their product, and network, with the hopes of raising capital, growing their customer base across new countries, \u201cpursuing clinical validation through research,\u201d and reviving that original concept of integrating a wearable device.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Hebee, founded in 2021, also used its CoLab membership to develop multiple iterations of its dispenser, including with help from the Jacobs Hall Makerspace and its 3-D printers, laser cutters, and other tools they could access at no extra cost. The team also gained valuable insight from the CoLab\u2019s diversity, equity, and inclusion activities, going on to partner with community and student organizations in the Bay Area to obtain and give out period products to those in need.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cWe as a team have benefited from DEI workshops to ensure that our brand continues to uphold these values through the way we iterate our product and how our presence is cultivated within the community,\u201d Lyles said.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Earlier in their residency, with help from Rehorn and their mentor Cathy Farmer, they figured out an effective user-testing plan, despite not yet having a fully functional prototype to try out on campus. Now, Lyles, Chan, and Satari are preparing to launch both their user-testing and their dispenser and app prototypes across the Cal campus \u2014 with app-development help from two \u201cbrilliant\u201d interns, Andres Lam and Yugam Surana.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThe energy in the CoLab space is positive, and makes working enjoyable for us,\u201d Lyles says. And that even includes a small kitchen where they can keep and prepare food on their longest working days. \u201cIt makes the student-founder balance a lot more manageable.
