Ocuelar uses a next-generation, nanotechnology-based hardware with a variety of sensors to record a patient’s medication usage in real-time. AI software and machine learning allows the device to identify at-risk glaucoma patients and predict their medication behavior. The result will be more accurate data for clinicians, earlier detection, and lower costs and better vision for patients.

Their device allows up to four patients to safely share a single hospital ventilator. The Prana Medical team — partly based in the UK — grew to include Akash Ghavalkar, Nikhil Pitta, Milana Marsh, and Nikitha Sridhar, and won the Innovation Catalyst Ignite Grant from the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation last year, which led to a prototype that validated some of their concept’s technological elements.

“We've designed a scalable care model consisting of informal, expert-led group sessions, in which mothers gain access to both clinically accurate information and peer-to-peer social interaction,” says Bryce. The app will group mothers together into cohorts and match them together based on their shared needs. “Our focus is on creating accessibility, equity of care, and mutual value for both the mothers and partnering clinical experts.”

Diabetic Retinopathy Detection with Machine Learning

Abigail Woolf was reading a research paper in her AI for Healthcare class about the success of a convolutional neural network — artificial neurons used to analyze visual imagery — that could detect referable diabetic retinopathy, a preventable but major cause of blindness around the world. The paper impressed her, but it was mum on actually utilizing an algorithm with so much potential in clinical settings. “I asked in class why the technology hadn’t been deployed,” says the Berkeley master of development engineering student, “and the professor said that it was complicated to standardize the data and processes behind everything.”
