Faculty​

We host salons and design charrettes to provide a multidisciplinary space for faculty and researchers from departments across campus to hear from and interact with colleagues and practitioners.

Startups & Health Tech Industry Professionals

Sharing stories and knowledge is fundamental to every Health Tech Innovator’s journey and success. The CoLab is a collaboration hub that brings together the expertise of many people important to the innovator — health tech entrepreneurs, industry leaders, investors and regulators.

Mentorship

Mentorship is critical to succeeding in the health tech space and we welcome experts in medical devices, diagnostics, digital health, experts who are interesting in sharing their knowledge and expertise with our innovative teams. If you are interested in mentorship opportunities, please fill out the Interest Form to let us know.

Diagnostic Toolkit

The Diagnostic Toolkit provides a framework to think through the interdisciplinary nature of launching a health care device all the way from the idea to deployment. It identifies key barriers to healthcare access that would benefit from technology innovation.

Programs We Collaborate With

The Big Ideas Contest is an important ecosystem for student-led health technology innovations. We identify and support teams whose innovations would benefit from CoLab resources. The Big Ideas Contest attracts and inspires dedicated teams of students through their annual competition who apply for seed funding to launch their ideas. In the past five years, over 400 applications have focused on health, including several that have gone on to become startup companies, including We Care Solar, CellScope Inc., and Respira Labs.

The Master of Development Engineering is UC Berkeley’s first professional degree committed to solving complex global challenges across the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors. The three-semester master’s program is interdisciplinary. It integrates engineering, economics, business, natural resource development, and social sciences to develop, implement, and evaluate technological interventions that address the needs of low-income communities around the world.

The MTM program is a cross-campus collaboration between the Department of Bioengineering at UC Berkeley and the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF. Students are enrolled in both universities, and draw on the range of expertise and technological resources available at the two institutions. In addition to these two core departments, students are encouraged to join in the collaborative and exciting environment at the HealthTech CoLab.
